A group of 35 actors and production crew members from across the Valley, including a couple from the Halifax area, were rehearsing “The Newsies” at the Wolfville School library on Sunday morning, Jan. 27. The musical was adapted and directed by Kerri Leier, with musical direction by Melissa Vidito and choreography by Tracy Fritz Nasson. The cast includes junior high, high school and university students and members of the general community. Adapted from the Disney movie “Newsies”, the play features music by Alan Menken and original tunes by Vidito. Leier says the story, which is based on the New York newsboys’ strike of 1899, centres on Jack Kelly, a streetwise, likable “newsie”, and his friends. They take on the powerful world of the press when they stand up to Joseph Pulitzer. “The Newsies” will be performed at the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville, on Feb. 7, 8 and 9. Show time is 7 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, in addition to the 7 p.m. show. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for children or $40 for a family of four. Call (902) 697-2515 for more information. Reporter Kirk Starratt was on hand for the Sunday rehearsal and files the following video package…
