This week Dwight d’Eon found himself in a place where he hasn’t been since cracking the Canadian Idol Top 10 – he was in the bottom three.

But following host Ben Mulroney’s announcement of who was going home the West Pubnico singer found himself back in familiar territory – he is moving on in the competition.

It was Newfoundland’s Tara Oram who was cut from the show Tuesday night, after having received the fewest amount of votes of the six competitors.

Carly Rae Jepsen rounded out the bottom three.

Now she, d’Eon, Matt Rapley, Jaydee Bixby and Brian Melo round out the Top 5.

In an interview with the Yarmouth Vanguard a few weeks ago – sandwiched in between d’Eon’s music of the 60s and unplugged performances – d’Eon said at the time his goal was to make the Top 5. “I’m pretty comfortable and confident in the fact that I’ll at least make Top 5,” he said, although that was before last week’s results show that saw Greg Neufeld voted from the show, throwing everyone – contestants, judges and viewers – in a loop since he was considered to be one of the strongest performers.

Did Neufeld’s exit better everyone else’s chances, or make them all more vulnerable?

The theme of next week’s Idol show is “My Own Idol” where the competitors get to choose their own musical inspirations.

At Empire Theatres on Starrs Road, where they air live feeds of the performance and results shows on one of the big screens, the management has waived the 5 p.m. restriction for picking up complimentary tickets, opting instead to let people come in at their leisure on Mondays and Tuesdays to pick up their tickets.

Die-hard D’Eon supporters, meanwhile, feel the phone system might have had something to do with the fact that the singer was in the bottom three. Many said they had to contend with more busy signals than in previous weeks, with one fan saying while they’ve been able to get through 90 per cent of the time during the past few weeks, on Monday night they only through 10 per cent of the time.

Meanwhile following Oram’s ousting from the show, a couple of new sites turned up on the Internet social network Facebook overnight called ‘All Newfies and Labs vote for Dwight d’Eon’ and ‘All East Coasters let’s support Dwight d’Eon.”

The sites are, in part, a jab towards judge Zack Werner’s comments about regional voting. The latter of the two sites reads, “Love him or hate him vote for Dwight,” saying it’s time a Maritimer was on top of the Idol podium.
