The Office Administration Class at the Nova Scotia Community College, Shelburne Campus raised over $4000 during their 2008/2009 college year to help animals in need throughout Shelburne County.
The class, led by instructor, Anne Lovitt-Atwood, organized many events throughout the year including ticket sales, silent auctions, 50/50 draws and special lunches. NSCC students also made cat food and kitty litter donations at Christmas time, when donations to PET Projects were at a low. “Just when we were scrambling with funds and supplies, the students came through. It was like Christmas to our group and to our animals in foster care,” said Hipson.
Beulah Burman Memorial Animal Shelter Society President, Rhonda Tufts was very pleased with the students’ initiative and effort.
“Beulah Burman’s PET Projects, a Branch of the Beulah Burman Memorial Animal Shelter Society (BBMASS) operates an animal rescue group in Shelburne County that places rescued pets in foster care. Pets receive vet care, are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and are advertised to find new homes. The donation from the OIT class played a huge role in over 178 cats being spayed/neutered and 150 homeless animals finding a forever family n 2008.”
“We’ve witnessed many acts of kindness whereby people are willing to partner with our group for the sake of an animal in need. For example, when foster homes are full, many people have been willing to bring the cat temporarily into their home, while we advertise, spay/neuter, and find a new home. Others have been willing to set a live trap in their yard, take the trapped cat to the vet, and we pay for the spay neuter. Businesses such as Allendale Electronics have donated much needed pet supplies, cat food and kitty litter. We can’t solve all the animal related issues alone, however, with people willing to “help us help the animals” we’ve made a difference together,” said Debra Harvey, Vice President of BBMASS.
Any individual or group who would like to help animals in need is encouraged to e-mail info@petprojects.ca or call and leave a message at 875-2367. To view pictures and descriptions of animals needing forever homes or if you are personally interested in becoming involved go to www.petprojects.ca
