Future scientists and engineers will be showing off their LEGO robotic creations this weekend as part of the FIRST LEGO League competition at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Burridge Campus.

Created in partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and The LEGO Group, the FIRST LEGO League is a program that helps young people between the ages of nine and 14 discover the fun in science and technology.

Eight student teams from schools throughout southwestern Nova Scotia have been working on their projects since September, with support from teacher advisors and NSCC faculty mentors. Each team has built a working robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS kits. This year’s theme is “Climate Connections” and each team will present research they’ve prepared on the topic as part of the competition.

The FIRST LEGO League competition will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15 at NSCC’s Burridge Campus in Yarmouth starting at 9a.m. Student teams will compete by putting their robots through a pre-determined series of challenges. Judges will also be looking at presentation skills and teamwork when deciding the winners. Awards will be handed out to the top teams starting at 3 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
