JA helps youth start own business

The Nova Scotia economy will get a boost over the next 22 weeks from high school students across the province as Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia (JA) kicks off its most popular program.

Company Program - A Student Venture, gives Nova Scotia students the opportunity to own and operate their own business, while having fun, networking with business leaders and gaining important skills to add to their resume and post-secondary applications.

In Middleton and Bridgetown, JA is still looking for community advisors to help out with the program and those interested can contact Brenda Kenny, program manager, Southwest Nova Scotia at 902-689-2595 or at bkenney@janovascotia.org.

Company Program gives Achievers an opportunity to create their own business in a low risk environment. They design, manufacture and market their own product or service. Working professionals, or advisors, volunteer to provide each Company with important resources as well as teach them responsible business practices. Achievers discover real business challenges and create solutions in an ethical and responsible way with the help of their community advisors.

In previous years, Achievers have manufactured products such as recycled vinyl record bowls, t-shirts, custom glassware, as well as planned dinner theater and dances.

Junior Achievement is a not-for-profit organization that inspires young Canadians to experience free enterprise, understand business and economics, and develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
