Carleton students getting extended summer vacation

Students who attend Carleton Consolidated School are getting an extended summer vacation.

While Tri-County Regional School Board students in southwestern Nova Scotia return to class on Thursday, Sept. 4, the first day of school for students at Carleton is only scheduled, at this point, for Monday, Sept. 8.

The reason for the delay in opening the school stems from work and clean-up still required as part of the multi-million expansion and renovations that have been taking place at the elementary school over the summer months. School board officials stated at the board’s meeting Tuesday night that there is still a lot of dust in the school that needs to be cleaned up, floor tiles to be waxed and telephone lines to be installed. “We’re aiming to get the students in Monday,” said superintendent Phil Landry, who, along with other board staff, commented that when the work at the school is complete, it is going to be a wonderful improvement.

The major centerpiece of the work that’s taken place is a new gymnasium, however it’s expected that it will be October before students and staff get to use the new gym as the floor still has to be laid. The delay in laying the floor has had to do with moisture in the gymnasium.
