“I’m a bit nervous,” said French assistant Marie-Claude Pastorel about putting together their first paper.

She along with teacher Rebecca Smart will help a group of five students publish the monthly newspaper.

It will consist of two to three pages.

Interest sparked when Grade 7 student Jeffery Hanlon asked if they could have a school newspaper. “It’s interesting, I think it’s a good student initiative,” said Pastorel.

Many students have asked if they can write something for the newspaper as well.

Pastorel said there will be a mailbox in the office where students can drop off submissions.

For now the paper remains unnamed.

Pastorel said there will be a name contest for students.

The first editor’s letter will be written by Hanlon. “Once the ball gets rolling,” said Smart, they will cover “school events, dances, what’s in-what’s out, all the stuff kids like to talk about.”

Pastorel hopes to find a place for the group to meet and write.

For now they use computers available in the school.

The newspaper’s publication will correspond with the South Queens Junior High School newsletter.
