CBC Nova Scotia named Central Kings Grade 12 students David Shepherd and Travis Price, a.k.a. the “Pink Shirt Kids,” and MP Bill Casey 2007 Nova Scotia Newsmakers of the Year in its January 1, 2008 broadcast.

The continuing stories were recognized for having lasting significance in Nova Scotia. The “Pink Shirt Kids” and Casey were featured in a special presentation on CBC TV at 6 p.m. Jan. 1 with CBC News At Six host Jim Nunn. In acts of honour and bravery, Casey defended the rights of his constituents with integrity and the students stood up against bullies in a non-violent way, impacting our province’s political scene and enacting real social change.

The Kings County Register first reported the story of the “Pink Shirt Kids” in September, a story which went on to spark provincial, national and international media attention. Students at C.K. rallied to wear pink after a Grade 9 student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school the first day of classes.
