Weymouth Consolidated School students had the opportunity to skate at the Digby rink twice in the last month because of a partnership between Tri-County Regional School Board and the Digby Area Recreation Commission.

Skating is endorsed by the school board’s Healthy Active Living programs, and is part of the school’s physical education program as well, and the partnership allows schools in the Digby area to promote active lifestyles.

This program also provided the opportunity for many parents to spend an hour with their young children at the rink, working with the teachers to tie skates and encourage the youngsters in their efforts to learn skating skills. “Students, teachers and parent volunteers are having a great time skating,” said school physical education teacherx Mary Thomas. “Skating is a lifetime sport that children can enjoy now and as they grow older.”

The school built up a supply of second-hand skates last year that was made available to students needing a pair. “Many students who play hockey or are learning to figure skate will help and encourage their peers who are on the ice for the first time. This is a wonderful experience for our students to enjoy outside the classroom,” Thomas said.

Weymouth students will have another chance to skate at the Digby rink after Christmas.
