With fundraising efforts surpassing the halfway mark, organizers are hoping to be able to raise Lockeport’s Little School Museum out of the flood danger zone by this fall.
“So far we’ve been lucky,” said Howard Rozsel, chair of the town’s museum committee, adding “anytime there’s a major deluge of water… anytime it rains” the museum is threatened by floodwaters.
Plans are to raise the museum by building a 32 inch foundation. The $20,000 buy a block fundraising campaign in support of the project was started last fall. So far $12,000 has been raised.
“We’re really putting a push on now because we’d like to see it done this fall,” said Rozsel. “We want this to be a place that people can visit for years to come.”
Organizers are appealing to corporate sponsors, the business community and residents in outlaying areas for support.
“The museum is so important… it’s our legacy,” said archivist Cheryl Nickerson.
The 1845 schoolhouse has served as a museum since 1967, housing four rooms of Lockeport area treasures from the past.
Located at the end of the causeway leading into town, the museum is now open for the season until Labor Day.
