A dozen Kings County artists, working in various visual art media, saw a need for promotion and space for their artworks.

They were also were very aware of the value of educating and exposing the local community, particularly youth, to the joy of creating art.

Out of this the Evangeline Artists’ Co-operative Ltd. formed this past summer, and it is currently a non-profit artists’ group numbering over 18 and growing, says spokeswoman Sally Benevides Hopkins.

The cooperative hopes to serve a vital role in promoting local artists and their art, local culture and providing opportunities for non-members to have a place to work and attend workshops, she adds. Also, realizing that many young peolple could benefit from increased exposure to the visual arts, links between youth and educators will be encouraged. “Watch for announcements about Evangeline Artists' Cooperative-sponsored workshops for youth and adults, and art events over the course of the year,” says Benevides Hopkins.

Purchasing original, local art not only supports the local economy, but is also a practical investment, she notes. “The art ranges from the traditional to the more contemporary, watercolour to sculpture - and will make wonderful gifts or additions to the home or office.” “Affordable Originals,” the cooperative’s first show and sale, will feature unique art for $100 or less. It will be held at Grand-Pre National Historic Site each weekend from Nov. 22 through to Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. November 22, Benevides Hopkins invites all to come celebrate the opening with refreshments and drinks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
