Scholarship auction raises $22,000

The tenth annual Liverpool Regional High School scholarship auction raised just over $22,000 on May 29, its highest amount yet. “It’s amazing, it was a huge success,” said scholarship auction committee chairperson, Kristopher Snarby. “We’re going to give 22, $1,000 scholarships out at graduation.”

For the past nine years the scholarship auction has been organized by Sharilyn Conrad, said Snarby. “She certainly set a strong foundation for it,” he commented.

Although this year saw some changes, he said they stayed true to what the auction began as.

This year businesses and individuals were able to make financial donations, contributing a couple thousand dollars to the grand total.

There was also a quilt raffled off, which raised about $2,000.

Advertising for the auction listed bronze, silver and gold sponsors, said Snarby. “For the auction itself we had hundreds of donations from community businesses and from individuals in the community, artists and other people who could donate their talents and time,” he continued.

He noted there are people who have given something to the auction every year.

Even businesses from Bridgewater and Halifax made donations, he added. “There were 116 liver auction items,” said Snarby, with “about 250 donations towards the silent auction.”

He wanted to mention Doug Fawthrop and Whitepoint Beach Resort. “Every year they really account for a lot of what we bring in and this year their donations count for about $6,500 of the total,” said Snarby. “So many individuals and businesses gave and if everybody gives a bit we can make so much money,” Snarby learned.

He said this is the first year the school is able to hand out scholarships worth $1,000 with the money raised from the auction.

LRHS staff who helped with the auction include David White, Nathan Smart and Brenda Potter.
