May 4 to May 10, 2008 continued

 - COTTREAU, George Eloi – Sunday Point, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Born February 1, 1923 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Augustus Cottreau (born in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia), and Nora (nee O’Neil – born in Liverpool, England). He was a veteran of the second World War, having served with the Royal Armed Forces and on D-Day in 1944, landed on Courseulles-sur-Mer (Juno Beach) at 10:30 in the morning to help in the liberation of Europe. He was a farmer and a landscaper, having owned and operated his own business, Southern Landscaping, until his retirement. Locals may remember dad’s slogan on his truck, “we live off grass.” He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. William A. Penney Council 2181, Yarmouth, and was also a member of Saint Ambrose Cathedral Parish, and a longstanding board member of the SPCA, Yarmouth. He was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth, where he also served on the Bluegrass Organizing Committee, and also a past member on the Parish Council of the former Notre Dame of Fatima Parish in Yarmouth. In recent years, dad was instrumental in organizing the outdoor Remembrance Day services at the Yarmouth Cenotaph, with Byron Boudreau’s help (thanks Byron!). Dad was a very kind, sociable and active person who really enjoyed life. He loved folk art, and spent many hours labouring at this task. He loved walking and also loved his property by the ocean at Sunday Point, where he took his daily walks with his faithful companion, Rico, whom he rescued from the SPCA. Dad always had a great love for animals and nature. He was very knowledgeable, loved politics and current affairs and was a real devotee of the news. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Gladys (Bowen) Cottreau (born in Aldershot, England); daughter, Patricia (Miles) Leznoff, Ottawa; sons, Philip, Sunday Point; Paul, Saint John, NB; Terence (Karen), Tusket; brothers, James, Yarmouth; Stanley, Halifax. He thought the world of his family and especially of his grandchildren, Thomas, Danielle, Andrew and Sarah. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Lorraine Mole (Kelly’s Cove) and Florence Goodwin (Toronto); a brother, Frank (Yarmouth). Visitation took place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, and again from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 12, with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by prayers at 8 p.m., all in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13 from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, 43 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Forest Street, Yarmouth. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to the Yarmouth SPCA. You may sign the online guestbook at www.huskilson.net
