Opening day of Lobster Bash 2014 was a big day for the Morehouse family.

John Morehouse of Digby won the Jumbo Lobster contest with a 19.6 pound lobster and his five-year-old son Waylon was crowned King of Lobster Bash at the opening ceremonies.

Waylon and the new Queen Isabella Phillips were chosen by a panel of judges based on the letters they wrote explaining why they would make a good representative for the festival.

“I would like to be Lobster bash King because my Dad catches lobsters and Lobster Bash is for him. And if my Mom says I can someday I might catch lobsters,” wrote Waylon.

Isabella wrote: “I would like to be the Lobster Bash Queen because I’m proud to be a lobster fisherman’s daughter, I know a lot about the ocean, I know how lobsters are fished and I know a lot about lobsters.”

The first event of the 2014 Lobster Bash was a visit to Tideview Terrace Home for Special Care.

Crusher, the Lobster Bash mascot, delivered 25 pounds of cooked and shelled lobster which cook Jason Priest cooked up into 70 litres of chowder for the residents and staff.

The lobster concessions opened at the rink at 5 p.m. and by 7 p.m. they were well into the third pot of chowder.

Lobster rolls and lobster chowder both cost $5 and will be on sale all day Saturday at the rink and downtown at the Marina on Sunday.

Note because of the impending storm, most of Saturday’s Lobster Bash activities will take place at the Digby arena.

The Mud Dash 3km run is still starting on the beach just north of the wharf at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, with registration starting at 10:30 a.m.
