Chris Thurber wants the Scallop Days fun to include rowboat races on the beautiful Digby harbour.

Scallop Days organizers are looking for four or five teams to enter a rowboat race.

Chris Thurber is hoping local fire departments, sports teams, the RCMP, businesses and other organizations will consider entering a team of three.

“It’s free to enter and it’s all about having some fun,” said Thurber. “We’ll have a big trophy and the winners can take that and show it off for a year and have all the bragging rights.”

Racers will row 14-foot rowboats and Thurber is planning to set the course from Tidal Boat Works straight across the harbour to near the wharf.

He figures it will take the average inexperienced rower about four-minutes.

Thurber is planning a format of three timed races for each team, with each team member rowing once, sitting in the stern once, and pushing the boat off from shore once.

The races are set for high water from 10 a.m. to on the Saturday morning of Scallop Days, Aug. 9.

Thurber would like any interested teams to register for the free event by the middle of July.

AQUAGOLF

Thurber is planning another fun and water-related event for this, the 139th Scallop Days—Aquagolf.

“I saw they are doing it in Halifax and we were looking for something fun with the water,” he said. “It just seems a natural fit.”

Golfers will tee off from the bottom of Convent Hill for the price of a 50/50 ticket. If they manage to hit the eight-foot by eight-foot floating green, they earn a second ticket for the 50/50.

Pat Cromwell of Weymouth is building the green for Scallop Days and Thurber says they will also lay down some all-weather carpet on the concrete for the tee off.

The Aquagolf will run Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At 2 p.m. Thurber is going to switch the golfing to a Long Ball competition.

“People love to just crush the ball,” he says. “This is their chance to drive one out there for bragging rights and a big trophy.”
