Local students were named national winners in the Royal Canadian Legion annual poster and literary contest. - Submitted
Canning students have talent.
This year, the Royal Canadian Legion Habitant Branch #73 had 180 submissions from Glooscap Elementary School and Northeast Kings Education Centre in Canning for the national annual poster and literary contest.
Legion member Jon Van Zoost said first and second place winners were first selected locally in each of the 14 categories.
“These submissions were then judged at the provincial level. From all of the entries across the province, a first and second place winner is selected in each category, and those are sent to Ottawa for judging at the national level.”
Out of the 28 first and second place winners from across Canada, Van Zoost said, “we had seven, which represents 25 per cent of the provincial winners.”
First place winners receive a certificate and a cheque for $50 from Provincial Command, while second place winners receive a certificate and a cheque for $35. The Canning Legion then decided to match all of the cash prizes.
“We are very proud of our local students,” Van Zoost stated.
At two recent assemblies, Legion members handed out the awards to all seven.
