It is an iconic reminder of a movie that was filmed in Shelburne 20 years ago.

But the Guild Hall, built in 1994 as a prop during the filming of the Scarlet Letter, is starting to show its age.

“It wasn’t really built to last,” noted Town CAO Dylan Heide.

Although built for a movie, the Guild Hall is a favourite spot in the summer for community events, concerts and a weekly open-air farmers’ market.

The Town of Shelburne, which owns the building, is hoping to hear from interested groups and people about what they would like to see happen to the building in the future.

Heide says councillors want to know if the structure should be replaced with something else, repaired, torn down or have facilities added on to it.

“We would like to hear what the potential users would like to see,” said Heide. “Maybe it’s something the structure doesn’t have capability of hosting now but could be adapted for.”

A workshop has been planned for Tuesday, May 6 at the Shelburne Community Centre to discuss issues surrounding the building.

The workshop starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the Men’s Meeting Room.

Heide, who noted that they had reached out about the workshop to current users of the Guild Hall, says it will be a starting point where a working group could be formed and be consulted again by Town Council.

The workshop is being hosted by the Town’s Community Participation and Volunteerism Committee.

Any repairs or changes to the structure have not beein included in the 2014-15 town budget discussion, but would be considered in the following budget year.

The Guild Hall will be in use again this summer hosting Founders' Days concerts, the Saturday farmers' markets and other events.
