Plans for a four-acre park in Clementsvale took a major step forward Thursday when West Nova MP Greg Kerr dropped by the Forrester Hall to announce $25,000 in federal funding for the project.

The park, that will sit on just over four acres behind and beside the hall, will include trails, a picnic area, an asphalt court for such sports as ball hockey and basketball, a sledding hill, benches, a natural playground, and even a memory garden.

The federal funding to the Clementsvale and District Recreation Commission came through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Kerr made the announcement on behalf of Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors). The money will allow the organization to create outdoor spaces that will support greater outdoor activities for seniors and encourage greater participation and inclusion of seniors in the community.

“The federal government’s support of our seniors projects is very much appreciated,” said John Tooker with the Clementsvale and District Recreation Commission. “This grant will allow us to create safe and practical outdoor spaces complete with picnic tables, benches, and walking path. Seniors from the community will be able to use this designated areas as a gathering place with friends and at the same time get a little bit of exercise and fresh air.”

Kerr praised the project, noting that the group received the maximum grant amount.

The commission plans to conduct a community campaign to seek additional funding. With the federal funds, they hope to have much of the work done this summer and fall. A little over four acres has already been cleared and ditches dug for drainage culverts.

Since it will take a number of years for shade trees to mature, the group hopes to use shade sails in the meantime.
