Sisters-in-law Edna and Geneve Newcombe were two of the 12 participants in the Port Williams Women’s Institute’s recent quilt runner workshop. The institute, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013, was chosen as the village’s representative for the 2014 provincial volunteer awards. -Submitted
One of the many interests of our Women’s Institute group is maintaining interest in the community in traditional crafts like quilting and rug hooking, so they recently offered a free quilted runner workshop with retired home ec. teacher Barb Gerrits. The dozen participants had such a great day with lots of learning, laughter, conversation and food that it was decided to do another craft workshop in the spring.
One of the institute’s projects for this year, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, is working on a display with other local history organizations featuring the contribution of women in the war effort. They are currently gathering information and artifacts and would like to hear from anyone who might have items that they would be willing to lend for the display. It will be on display at the Randall House Museum this spring and then move to Prescott House.
Congratulations to the Women’s Institute for being chosen to be the recipients of this year’s Port Williams representative volunteer award. They will attend the 40th annual provincial volunteer awards ceremony and luncheon in Halifax on April 7 and be presented with the Harold B. Legge Volunteer of the Year award at the village AGM in June.
