Queens teacher creates YouTube campaign for Locks of Love

High school teacher Amanda Fisher is cutting her hair for Locks of Love, and has created a YouTube campaign to engage her students.

Amanda Fisher, a teacher at LRHS, is cutting her hair for Locks of Love and creating a campaign for her students to rally around. 

Fisher is a teacher at Liverpool Regional High School and has been growing her hair for quite a while. She had been thinking of giving her long locks a cut but decided it would be more meaningful to use her hair for something good.

"Why would I cut it if there could be a use for it?” says Fisher.

Fisher is instead keeping her hair for now but plans to cut it for Locks of Love, a group that accepts hair to make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical reasons. 

Fisher has created an ongoing series of videos on YouTube called “101 Reasons to Keep My Hair” and started the hashtag #MsFisherChops2014. The videos and hashtag are a way for her to create discussion and engagement with her students.

The videos are all light-hearted and show Fisher using her hair for things such as disguises, multi-tasking or to look like a character from a popular TV show.

“The generation I work with today are media based kids,” says Fisher about why she decided to go online with the campaign.

Fisher says some students have already jumped on board the idea and want to cut their own hair for Locks of Love with her.

The school has rallied behind the idea and students have been fundraising for the Cancer Society. 

Fisher is getting her hair cut by local hair stylist Chris Hanley on Feb. 14. She says she is a little nervous about the cut but also excited.

“I don't plan on going super short this time because there's plenty there but it'll definitely be above my shoulders which will be a change for me,” says Fisher.
