The Canning Fire Department and the Village of Canning is another step closer to breaking ground on a new community multi-complex, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the staff at Scotiabank in New Minas. Staff worked all year to raise money through initiatives such as a book sale, quilt raffle, barbecues and staff potlucks. Scotiabank matched what staff raised, resulting in a $2,672 donation to the project. Community fundraising committee chairman Terry Porter, front, left, and Canning Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Skaling, front, right, were on hand to accept the donation from branch manager Mike Mills and staff. Skaling said they hope to break ground on the $3.8 million project, a 19,000-square-foot building that will include a new fire station, community centre, village offices and more, in 2014. – Kirk Starratt, www.kingscountynews.ca
