Tom Fralic running during the Team In Training race in San Francisco. Tom and his girlfriend Natasha Gillam raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada in honour of friends and relatives affected by the disease. Now Tom, Natasha and Tom’s father Brian Fralic will run the race together.
The two are getting ready to go again for their second race and this time they’ll be joined by Tom’s father, Brian Fralic.
After Natasha signed up, Tom began toying with the idea of signing up too. That’s when he heard local Ali Cameron had been diagnosed with leukemia (and later succumbed to the disease). Tom, who is friends with Ali’s brother, decided to sign up the very next day.
The couple put on a few fundraisers including renting a bouncy castle for Privateer Days and having kids pay by donation to use it.
Tom and Natasha’s race was through a program called Team In Training (TNT), which supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Each participant gets training and mentoring for running or walking the endurance race in San Francisco. Each participant must also raise $4000 to pay for the trip plus to raise money for the society.
“We both did better than we were expecting,” says Tom.
Tom says he really enjoyed being involved with the group and signed up again, this time not just with Natasha but also with his father.
Brian says at first he didn’t realize just how important the race was.
“The day of, it kind of hit me, here’s a 22 year-old, both of them 22, both who have trained and raised $4,000 and both of whom are running it for a friend, it kind of just hit me how important it was,” says Brian.
Brian decided to get involved for the next year.
“I decided at that point, he will never run another race, if I am not there.”
As Brian is not a runner, he will be walking the race. He is walking the race in memory of Ali Cameron.
Brian and Tom are hosting a fundraiser at Queens Place Emera Centre to get their required $4,000 in donations each. Natasha has already finished her fundraising.
The fundraiser is on Sept. 29 at Queens Place Emera Centre. Tom and Brian will be walking the indoor running track. They are attempting to walk 99 laps around it to simulate the length of the race in San Francisco.
Members of the public are encouraged to come over between 9 and 11 a.m. to walk a few laps with Brian and Tom. A bake sale and a silent auction will also be taking place there and the Cameron family will be attending. Kevin Page is hosting the event.
Brian also encourages anyone who is joining them to wear purple.
