The Community Policing Office of the Queens County RCMP Detachment is proud to announce that they are hosting the annual WOW Reading Challenge for Literacy charity hockey game between the RCMP All-Star Bisons hockey team and the Bridgewater Nauss Tim-Br Mart Lumberjacks Junior “A” Hockey Club on Jan. 23rd at the Queens Memorial Arena at 6:30pm in Liverpool.

The Adopt-A-Library Literacy Program gives children and youth the tools and skills they need to have the power to decide not to engage in criminal behavior. The WOW reading challenge will involve children and teaching staff at the Dr. John C Wickwire Academy in Liverpool and the funds raised from the game will benefit the school in purchasing books to be read during the reading challenge that started in November 2009 and runs until April 2010. “The students at Dr. John C. Wickwire read over 25,000 books last year and have been challenged with reading 40,000 books this year” said Cst. Laura CORMIER, Community Policing Coordinator.

To increase the availability of books for the students during the challenge the RCMP Bisons will match the crowd paying attendance with $1,000.00 dollars worth of books if $1,000 dollars is raised at the main gate.

This is the third year the RCMP Bisons have come to Liverpool to play in the WOW reading challenge charity game and they are looking forward to playing the Bridgewater Lumberjacks Junior A Hockey club as they are undefeated against Junior A hockey clubs.

For more information about the WOW reading challenge please feel free to contact the Queens County Community Policing Coordinator at 902-354-5721.
