Yarmouth County Tri-County school board Lieutenant Govenor Medal recipients

Four Yarmouth County students who attend Tri-County Regional School Board schools received the Lieutenant Governor Medal this year. The medals are awarded annually to one male and one female Grade 11 student from a school who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in school and their community.

The recipients from Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School were Samuel Raymond Flynn and Maria Nicole Wilson.

At YCMHS Sam has been involved in many activities. He participates in SPIRIT, Winter Carnival, student council and robotics, illustrating his broad range of interests. He helped produce the school yearbook. He has helped raise money for Terry Fox, Run for the Cure and other organizations. He volunteers at many events and helps out at the Central School Breakfast Program. He is enrolled in French immersion program and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme student .

Maria is in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the French immersion program. She plays volleyball at the varsity and club level. She helped with the school yearbook. She has volunteered for several years at the breakfast program at her former elementary school and participates in a myriad of activities at school and in the community.

At Drumlin Heights Consolidated School the medal recipients were Katia Antsipenka and Josh Mark Muise.

Katia first came to Canada, at age seven, as part of the Canadian Relief Fund for Chernobyl Victims in Belarus. She now attends high school here. She has learned the English language and maintains superior marks. She works with children in the Chernobyl group to help them adapt to their new host families and Canadian culture. She is active in school committees and tutors high school students in math and science.

Josh is an academically strong student who is actively involved in many school activities such as the Travel Club, Spirit Committee and Winter Carnival. Along with his part time job at Sobeys he participates in many community events such as the Terry Fox Run and breast cancer research fundraisers. He has volunteered with the RCMP Cops for Cancer in Summerland, B.C. while vacationing in the summer. After high school he plans to obtain a science degree and then go on to medical school. He hopes someday to be part of “Doctor Without Borders.”
