Students and staff at the Shelburne Regional High School were getting their hands dirty last Friday, creating a community garden that offers the opportunity to benefit many people for years to come.
From the “Tom Willis orchard” where peach, pear, apple and plum trees have been planted, to the 10 raised growing beds constructed by students in the skilled trades class which are available for public use, the community garden is sure to become a focal point of the school grounds.
SRHS principal Mary Manning said the school has received $5,000 in funding from the Shelburne County Community Health Board and $3,000 from the Tri-County Regional School Board to help with the initiative.
Any one from the community who would like to use one of the raised beds to plant vegetables can contact Manning.
The students will be planting produce in any of the raised beds not spoken for, said Manning, which will be harvested in the fall and will mark the start of a curriculum for Grade 7 students on the entire spectrum of where food comes from.
