Grand View Manor matters

Grand View Manor started October with a bingo, put on by Berwick United Church.

We had a Thanksgiving Social with readings. Pie was served. Donations were accepted Thanksgiving Sunday for the food bank during our church service.

To celebrate “Bosses Day,” we did a front-page challenge afternoon. The residents enjoyed this program.

We had a scarecrow festival, with units decorated with scarecrows. Our Physio department won as best decorated. We also had a pumpkin dessert contest. Connie McMahon and Katherine Benedict were the judges. First prize was Pumpkin Cheesecake, made by dietitian Linda Davidson; second was Liz Johnson’s pumpkin dessert and third was shared by the Pumpkin Roll by Activity and Pumpkin Cake by Brenda Lee Kelly.

Due to our van being in for repair, we were only able to do one drive to see the leaves and pumpkin people.

Daisy Kidston came from Halifax and did a presentation on climate control. This was very informative and the residents learned a lot.

Karen Schurman came and decorated pumpkins as residents watched. Departments and units decorated their own pumpkins, which residents judged at our Halloween party. Robin Foley and youth from Berwick school came dressed up and provided music. Winners of the pumpkin carving were 1st place – Office, 2nd place – Housekeeping and 3rd place – Physio. Everyone did a great job and residents had a wonderful time.

We are having a craft fair Nov. 30 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a white elephant table Saturday only. Admission is $2. If anyone would like to book a table, call Lynn Hardy at the manor, 538-3118.

Our Chinese auction was a success once again this year. Over $3,000 was raised for resident activities. Thanks to all businesses, staff and family who donated items for this auction. Also, thanks to the staff and volunteers who came and worked.

Residents are looking forward to Christmas and, hopefully, the flu bug will not arrive as it did last year. Residents missed out on all then planned Christmas programs.

The Junior Volunteer Program is underway, with only two new youth, Jessica Collins and Britney Cornect, joining the team. Welcome to all.
