Lots of support for MACS

The Multi Addiction Centre Society, based in North Kingston, has had a busy year.

When Andy Anderson decided 15 years ago the community needed a building in the area to provide a safe place for 12-step groups to meet, he gathered a group of 15 people together, made them directors and everyone chipped in $10. This $150 has been like the loaves and fishes: thanks to the help of many great people over the years, the fund has grown to provide the money to repair and maintain a building and buy necessary supplies.

This past fiscal years started with a mad rush of repairs, necessary to meet fire marshall requests. Work was done by A.J.’s Construction and Kings Painting Contractors, both of which made donations to MACS to help lower fees. Thanks to Kings Councillor Wayne Atwater, a municipal grant also helped toward expenses.

The roof on the building’s south side had never been replaced and was in bad need, along with the old brick chimney. Garth Dearman Construction’s estimate was accepted, and a one-third provincial grant was approved to cover some of the costs. Fundraising through a Chinese auction, run by Barb Acker, and a bingo, put on by the Valley Girls, were of great help. The girls - Cookie, Kaye, Joanne, Mary, Karen and Rachael - raised just under $1,000. Winners of the draws were Joan Weir, the food basket; James McNeil, the picnic basket; Margaret Cole, the 50/ 50.A new sign by Corbin’s on the side of the building makes it easier for people to find the centre. There are plans to do some insulation work on the building’s north side and make the washroom accessible. A further $500 municipal donation has been received.

Thanks to all those who support the centre and its programs: time, effort, donations and funds that are appreciated. Two couples in particular have given the greatest part of their lives through the past 15 years, keeping MACS going: Russ and Barb Acker and Dale and Kaye Veinot. They have been the driving force behind a team of volunteers working over the years.
