A 66-year-old man from the United States who left Fairhaven, Connecticut en route to the Azores had his sail boat capsize 185 nautical miles southeast of Greenwood when it ran into tropical depression Cristobal yesterday evening.

413 Transport and Rescue Squadron were tasked by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax to search for the vessel. The vessel was first located by a C-130 Hercules aircraft and then a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter arrived on scene. The man was hoisted up from the overturned vessel with the assistance of Search and Rescue Technicians. He suffered mild hypothermia and minor lacerations.

The man was transported to 14 Wing Greenwood (instead of Halifax due to bad weather) where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the Soldier’s Memorial hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia.
