Work was well under way last week on repairing the storm-damaged causeway in Western Head.

Topics :
Department of Transportation , Western Head , Victoria Lake

Hurricane Bill washed out a large section of the causeway on Aug. 23. The throughway, which joins two sides of a peninsular loop, is surrounded by Victoria Lake on one side and the open ocean on the other.

Department of Transportation Operations Manager Tim Crowe said last week crews first cleared and repaired the throughway enough to allow further work and department vehicles on the causeway.

He said further protection in the form of armor rock would be added to protect the area. “The rock berm has been pretty well depleted so there is nothing to stop the waves from going across the road.”

He also expects to recover asphalt that has fallen into Victoria Lake. He said he isn’t certain when the road will re-open, only that it will in the near future.
