A small crowd gathered at the foggy West Head wharf to see an unusual double boat launching on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
The two new fishing boats, both under construction since early spring, just happened to be completed on the same day and launched on the same high tide in Clarks Harbour.
The largest of the two boats launched on Tuesday was more than 27 feet wide and almost 50 feet long.
The Fox I was the last and widest boat to be constructed by Bruce Atkinson Boatbuilding.
Built for Robert Fox, of Salmon River, the new vessel was expected to make its way to its home port in a few days.
Its construction saw the need to widen the boat shop doors in order to move it in and out. With the job finished, the business will be taken over by Thelbert Smith, who will be starting a new boat project in the coming weeks at the shop.
The smaller vessel launched at the West Head Wharf on Tuesday was constructed by Alyward Fiberglas in Shelburne.
The 25’ x 50’ Broadbill Hunter was built for Arlie Wickens in Bear Point.
