The Michelin plant in Waterville
Upcoming changes to the workforce at the Michelin plant in Granton, Pictou County are not expected have any impact on staffing at Nova Scotia’s other two plants in Waterville and Bridgewater.
Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. announced March 3 it will significantly reduce tire manufacturing at its car and light truck tire plant over the next 18 months. Five hundred positions are being eliminated, with the first 200 employees set to lose their jobs in June 2014. The remaining 300 will lose theirs in June 2015.
Michelin North America President Grant Ferguson, who served as plant manager at the Waterville facility until 2009, said the job cuts are being made in response to changes in market demands for small car tires.
Michelin spokesperson Deborah Carty confirmed later in the day the downsizing will not affect operations in Waterville or Bridgewater.
“No, this announcement does not impact the Waterville or the Bridgewater sites,” said Carty via email.
