A Kings County farm has won a Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Award.

Taproot Farm of Port Williams took home the award in the producer category.

Co-sponsored by Spirit Nova Scotia and Select Nova Scotia, the third annual Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Awards were announced by Dr. Ralph Martin, director of the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada and Spirit Nova Scotia local food committee chairman, at the IncrEdible Picnic in Dartmouth Aug. 22.

The awards celebrate individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the local food movement in Nova Scotia. Nominees were evaluated on achievements in environmental stewardship, community engagement, promotion of local food and creativity and innovation. The winners received an award certificate and a Taste of Nova Scotia gift basket.

The Lunenburg Farmers Market won in the Non-profit category and Ellora Natural and Organic Foods won in the Business category.
