Horton High School , U.S.

To the Editor:

How often do we get an opportunity to see a Canadian record being set...right in our own hometown?

Not often! Seldom! It was well promoted in the media and yet attendance while the Horton High School boys’ basketball team went after the Canadian record for continuous victories last weekend in their home gym was dismal.

For sure there were parents and students, but where were the local sports fans? Almost non-existent! What a shameful thing that was.

It was indeed a real pleasure to see a team such as this. Without question, their coach has taught these young men sportsmanship, teamwork and passion. They are not only tremendous athletes, but shining examples of fine young men.

It was my pleasure to have the privilege to attend the games, but wonder about the local pride, which we see so little of. Recall last year when it was necessary to advertise locally grown produce to get Valley folks to support our local farmers!

We are very quick to pounce on the American culture, but they show great pride in their hometown heroes and, make no mistake, these young men are indeed heroes for what they have accomplished and the way in which they have done so. They deserve our respect.

How many so-called sports fans were in their easy chairs at home watching U.S. football instead of supporting our young athletes? It boggles the mind.

Shame on us, but it's not too late to show support as the Horton High School boys’ basketball team strives to continue its unbeaten streak and better their own Canadian national record.

Congratulations to these student athletes and their coaches.
