The Yarmouth Mariners edged the Dieppe Commandos Sunday night in Yarmouth 2-1. The win puts Yarmouth two points out of being tied with the Amherst Ramblers for the fifth playoff spot in the Bent Division. Yarmouth sits at 36 points and Amherst at 38.
The Mariners took two out of three games during a home stance over the weekend with a 4-1 over Truro on Friday night. The Mariners feel to Dieppe 3-1 on Saturday.
On Sunday Carl Hayes and Mitch Kerr led the Mariners scoring with one goal and one assist each. Hayes (powerplay) scored at 8:05 to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead after the first period. Andrew Taylor scored at 6:14 to tie the game at 1-1. Kerr (game winner) scored at 14:54 to retake the lead for Yarmouth at 2-1 after the second period. There was no third period scoring, although the Mariners attempted to score am empty netter right at the closing buzzer.
Yarmouth went 1 for 4 on the powerplay while Dieppe went 0 for 4. Alex Newman stopped 29 of 30 shots for the win while Mario Babineau stopped 24 of 26 shots in the loss.
This week the Mariners will have their work cut out for them, playing the league-leading Woodstock Slammers twice – once on the road on Wednesday and then at home on Saturday evening, Feb. 13. Woodstock has a record of 40 wins and two losses and sits with 81 points. The Mariners also play Halifax in between the two Woodstock games.
Amherst, meanwhile, has three more games scheduled against the Bent Division leaders, Truro Bearcats, which have 64 points. It will also be playing Miramichi and Campbellton.
