It goes without saying that Memorial Park in Kentville is the best baseball facility in the Maritimes. With this in mind, however, I ask the question, why is there so much water on the infield following rainstorms?

Actually, I can answer my own question. Nothing has been done to correct the problem.

The infield is not level. If it were level, the water would disperse rather than collect in the low spots.

Anyone who has looked upon this diamond following a heavy rain has seen several ‘mini lakes’ on the infield.

This is not the fault of the groundskeeper. He does a great job with what he has to work with. What he needs is some appropriate materials with which to fill those low areas.

How expensive could this be? Furthermore, how expensive would some new tarps be for covering the pitcher’s mound and batter’s box areas? The holes in the old ones tend to let the water in.

My comments are not prompted by anyone. I saw for myself last Sunday morning the terrible condition of this baseball field when a game was scheduled for 2 p.m. the game had to be rescheduled to 4 p.m., while the groundskeeper and several volunteers did a commendable job in making the field ready by game time.

This situation has been ongoing for a couple of years at least.

I’m sure that there is a reason for Memorial Park being neglected. I would most appreciate someone telling me what that reason is.

Meanwhile, I have been a fan of the Wildcats for about as long as anyone. And I will continue to be so even if they have to play in the mud.
