U.S. retailer Best Buy Co. is opening eight locations across Ontario and British Columbia, including a store in Ottawa. The new Best Buy will be located at Merivale Road and Viewmount Drive.

Minneapolis-based Best Buy is making an aggressive move to gather a chunk of the Canadian appetite for digital toys and entertainment software. The company plans to have 65 stores throughout Canada over a three-year period.

To date, eight leases have been signed, and the firm expects to open 15 stores in the fall of 2002. Most of the properties now leased are in Toronto.

"Reaching new consumers in Canada is pivotal to Best Buy's mission to be a world class leader in making technology and entertainment products affordable and easy to use." said Richard M. Schulze, Best Buy chairman and CEO.

The retailer will hire about 2,000 employees for the first wave of store openings and for their Canadian head office in Toronto. In the U.S., Best Buy has about 400 stores across 41 states.
