Pearson - whose interests span education, books, magazines and TV - said it had reached a preliminary agreement with America Online over its new education network and had also signed deals with various educational Internet companies.
Pearson bought Simon & Schuster's textbook division in November 1998.
London-based Pearson said pre-tax profit before one-time items and goodwill rose to 402 million pounds ($635 million) in 1999 from 350 million pounds the previous year. That was in line with the consensus among analysts of 399 million pounds pretax.
